SACIDS has identified the following 8 elements as its core values that will govern its strategic objectives and programme of work:

1. One Health approach to infectious diseases of humans, animals and ecosystems
2. Equity between Public Health and Animal Health which is based on mutual trust and is embedded in structures and practices
3. Virtual Centre concept at regional and national levels
4. Research Excellence Leadership of joint programmes between academic and national research institutions
5. Smart partnership with Centres of Science excellence in industrialised countries as well as international research centres. SACIDS will also seek effective South-South-North Partnership, especially through its membership of CORDS (www.cordsnetwork.org)
6. Community of Practice modus operandi underpinned by inter-sectoral collaboration
7. Proactive stakeholder and public/community/industry engagement
